Jamming and Lessons
Want to Jam?
Jamming is the practice of getting together with other musicians that share the love for and playing the music, sharing your songs and tunes, and sharing your experience of Old-time music with others. One does not have to prepare for Jams or agree on any predetermined arrangements to play. Just get together and begin playing. Jamming also provides a social setting in which players can share the experience of life. This is the kind of context Old-time music developed within, as folk musicians gathered to dance, build a cabin, raise a barn, "break up" Christmas, harvest the crop, or just to play. It was shared as often as possible and always was open to new players and their tunes. In this way, the music continued to shape and change.
If you would like to participate in a jam session, a few are listed below. However, there are only two local jams we know of dedicated to Old-time music. One is located at the TIME WARP TEA ROOM and the other is at our home, when we have jams. The Front Porch Jam is mostly Old-Time but occasionally other styles come, mostly Celtic.
There are a lot more Bluegrass jams in this area than Old-time, but these jams always welcome the Old-timer as well. Below are a few jams where Old-time music might be heard and played. If you know of an additional Old-time jam and would like to have it posted here, please let us know at boogertowngap@comcast.net.
Time Warp Tea Room - every first Wednesday of the month, Knoxville, TN, strictly Old-Time
Front Porch Mexican Restaurant - near Newport, TN, on the fourth Sunday of the month when open (April - October), 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. This is a fun one because the musicians are actually on a mini-stage performing for the diners.
Ciderville Music Store - Thursdays from noon until 4 pm; Clinton, TN, some Old-Time, but always soup on the house
Pickin' Porch - Saturdays during the season, Townsend, TN
We would like to start an Old-time jam near their home in Pittman Center, TN. If you're interested please contact us and we'll get together, OR if you're coming into town and want to know about additional jams, please get in touch with us. We'll try to let you know what is out there.
For those of you who are traveling and want to know about jams, visit
and find where the jams are or post your own jam.
